Blizzard Brings Back Overwatch Classic Mode: 6v6 Action and Original Heroes

13. November 2024 by Valentin Pasetti

In an exciting nostalgia-driven move, Blizzard has announced Overwatch Classic, a limited-time mode in Overwatch 2 that will take players back to the game’s 2016 roots. This new mode revives the beloved six-versus-six gameplay format with the original hero roster, capturing the experience of Overwatch as it was at launch.

What is Overwatch Classic?

Overwatch Classic is inspired by other games’ recent throwback events, like Fortnite and Apex Legends returning to their original versions. This mode will allow players to relive iconic eras in Overwatch’s history by reintroducing heroes, abilities, and gameplay styles from some of the game’s most memorable metas.

Blizzard has hinted that future Classic events could focus on other periods, such as the fast-paced “Moth Meta” from 2017 and the well-known “GOATS” era, known for its triple-tank, triple-support composition.

Original Heroes, Maps, and 6v6 Gameplay

From November 12 to December 2, players can dive into Overwatch Classic to experience the game’s original 21 launch heroes, each with their pre-rework abilities. Notable returning features include:

  • Roadhog’s infamous hook with its early mechanics
  • Hanzo’s Scatter Arrow, a one-shot powerhouse
  • Symmetra’s “Car Wash” with multiple sentry turrets
  • Bastion’s original Sentry mode, offering devastating stationary firepower

With six-versus-six teams and no role restrictions, players can stack heroes as they could back in the early days. This means players can, for example, create a team of six Winstons, or a combination of Lucios and Winstons for chaotic fun. Classic maps like King’s Row, Temple of Anubis, and Watchpoint: Gibraltar are also back, each recreated as they appeared at the game’s launch.
