ESIC Penalizes Astralis With $15K Over Emergency Substitution in BLAST Premier

27. November 2024 by Valentin Pasetti

The Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) has fined Astralis $15,000 USD after investigating their emergency substitution request during the BLAST Premier Fall Final. The ruling highlights concerns over integrity, transparency, and accountability in esports.

The Controversy Unfolds

In September, Astralis announced Casper “cadiaN” Møller as their newest signing. However, cadiaN was ineligible for the BLAST Premier Fall Final due to the roster submission deadline of September 4. To address this, Astralis requested an emergency substitution, claiming a medical issue prevented Alexander “br0” Bro from participating.

While BLAST approved the substitution, the decision quickly drew criticism when br0’s agent, Fabian Broich, publicly denied any medical concerns, stating his client was in perfect health. BLAST referred the matter to ESIC for a formal investigation.

ESIC Findings and Penalties

After two months of investigation, ESIC determined that:

  • Astralis breached ESIC’s Integrity Program, failing to maintain transparency expected of a professional esports organization.
  • BLAST approved the substitution request based on insufficient validation, relying solely on Astralis’ claims.

Although the substitution didn’t impact tournament outcomes—Astralis exited in the group stage—ESIC emphasized the importance of integrity in such decisions.

Sanctions Against Astralis

  1. A $15,000 USD fine, to be donated to an ESIC-approved charity.
  2. Forfeiture of the $10,000 USD prize money earned during the tournament.
  3. A commitment from BLAST to improve procedures for managing emergency substitutions.

Astralis Responds

Astralis expressed disappointment in the ruling, stating:

“We take the ruling into account, but we maintain that our actions were in line with applicable Danish employment laws. We are disappointed that ESIC’s decision does not include the employer’s legal obligation to protect its employees in sensitive situations.”

The organization announced its own $15,000 donation to the Danish Mental Health Foundation (Psykiatrifonden), reflecting their stance on employee well-being.

Implications for Esports Integrity

This controversy highlights the need for robust governance in esports, with ESIC reaffirming its commitment to fairness and accountability. BLAST, in turn, has pledged to refine its processes for emergency substitutions, aiming to prevent future issues of this nature.

The $15,000 USD penalty serves as a reminder to organizations about the importance of integrity, ensuring esports maintains credibility on the global stage.
