Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) has made a comeback to the United States, with players now able to re-download and enjoy the popular mobile MOBA game following its recent ban. Here’s what happened, why the game was banned, and what’s next for MLBB in the US.
Why Was MLBB Banned in the US?
MLBB, developed and published by MOONTON, a subsidiary of Bytedance (owner of TikTok), was banned in the US on January 19th, 2025. The ban coincided with TikTok’s suspension, following an Executive Order by the US government.
While TikTok services were restored just hours after the ban, MLBB’s return was delayed until the early hours of January 21st.
Official Announcement
MLBB confirmed its return with a statement:
“Great news! Mobile Legends: Bang Bang is officially back after a brief pause. Simply open the app as usual, no additional action is needed, and jump right back into the fun. Thank you for your patience and support during our brief pause. We’re thrilled to have you back.”
To compensate for the downtime, MOONTON is offering returning players a small gift and in-game rewards that were unavailable during the ban.
Impact on the US Esports Scene
MLBB’s return comes just in time for the 2025 MPL season, set to begin in February. While the game has a smaller player base in the US compared to its primary market in Southeast Asia, the region hosts tournaments that offer qualification for major international events.
TikTok and Future Concerns
The Executive Order lifting TikTok’s ban only suspends enforcement for 75 days, meaning MLBB and other Bytedance-affiliated games, like Marvel Snap, could face another shutdown if the situation escalates.
What’s Next for Mobile Legends: Bang Bang?
With its services restored, MLBB players can now dive back into the action and prepare for upcoming events. However, the game’s future in the US remains uncertain if TikTok-related concerns resurface. For now, fans can enjoy the game while staying tuned for updates regarding its long-term status.
