As Overwatch 2 enters its second week featuring the Samoan warrior Mauga, Blizzard Entertainment is gearing up for more tweaks. These adjustments are pivotal for Mauga’s debut in the competitive scene of Season 8. Blizzard’s focus is on fine-tuning Mauga for competitive play without overpowering him.
Mauga’s Balancing Act
Alec Dawson, the lead hero designer, announced via social media that Mauga will undergo a set of adjustments on December 19th. These changes are crucial for maintaining balance in the hero shooter game.
Recent Changes and Future Adjustments
Mauga has already experienced significant changes in Overwatch 2. After feedback from the free play weekend, Blizzard initially buffed him at the start of Season 8. A subsequent nerf on December 12th reduced the damage of his Incendiary and Volatile Chain Cannons, the shots needed to burn an enemy, and the duration of his ultimate, “Cage Fight”.
The upcoming tweaks will likely revert the ignition effect reduction on his left-click and enhance his survivability. This could involve adjustments to his armor/health, Berserker passive, or main abilities like Charge or Cardiac Overstimulation.
Mauga’s Current Performance
According to statistics from Overbuff, Mauga has become a top pick in the Overwatch 2 meta, boasting a 58% win rate. He shines with the massive damage from his Incendiary and Volatile Chain Cannons. Countering Mauga typically involves tanks like D.Va or Sigma, who can absorb his bullets, or supports like Ana or Zenyatta, who can sedate or weaken him.
Last set of Mauga changes gave us a clearer look at his positioning and we'll be making some more adjustments before he enters Competitive next week. We'll be rolling back the ignite change on the left-click and tuning up his survivability further.
Should go live Tuesday.
