A Shift in Strategy: DMZ Mode’s Future Uncertain
Activision has recently made a significant announcement concerning the DMZ mode in Call of Duty, indicating a pivotal shift in its content strategy. This decision marks the end of an era for the first extraction mode of the franchise, which will no longer receive progression updates tied to Modern Warfare III and Warzone.
DMZ Mode: The End of an Innovative Chapter
DMZ mode, known for bringing a unique Call of Duty twist to the extraction genre popularized by titles like Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown, will continue to exist in its beta phase. However, it will be detached from the post-launch content of Modern Warfare III and Warzone, losing its progression system linkage.
Key Changes:
- No More Progression System: DMZ will be independent of Modern Warfare III and Warzone progression.
- Limited Content Updates: Future updates for weapons, cosmetics, and battle pass content will not be integrated into DMZ.
THANK YOU to the #DMZ community for making the Beta so special.

Accessibility and Future of DMZ
Despite these changes, DMZ mode will remain accessible through the CoD barracks, under the battle royale section. Current missions and maps, like Al Mazrah and the Koschei Complex, will stay available, but they will no longer align with the broader game updates.
What Remains for DMZ Players
- Weapon and Account Leveling: Ties to Modern Warfare II leveling systems will remain.
- Independent Launcher: Uncertainty surrounds the need for a separate game launcher.
Activision’s Ongoing Experiments with Open-World Dynamics
Activision has indicated that their development team will continue to explore open-world experience dynamics. This approach is exemplified by the zombies in Modern Warfare III, offering gameplay that echoes the extraction mode but with notable variations.
Rembracing Change in CoD
As Activision navigates this transition, players are encouraged to adapt to the new landscape of Call of Duty. While the DMZ mode enters a new phase, its legacy in pioneering extraction gameplay in CoD will not be forgotten.
