Apex Legends and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Event: A Controversial Collaboration

8. January 2024 by Valentin Pasetti

Apex Legends, the popular FPS game, has taken the gaming world by surprise with its unexpected collaboration with the much-anticipated sequel, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. This event has introduced exciting new elements but has also sparked controversy among the gaming community.

The Heart of the Controversy: Monetization Strategy

The central point of contention revolves around the monetization strategy employed for the event’s exclusive content. A limited-time event is set to be launched, featuring items inspired by the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth franchise, such as the iconic Buster Sword and Materia.

However, obtaining these items, particularly a mythic skin for Death Boxes, is reported to require a substantial investment of up to $360 USD.

Balancing Novelty and Community Backlash

While the collaboration brings fresh content to Apex Legends, it has also faced backlash due to its perceived excessive monetization. The event is expected to include 36 new cosmetics, integrated into a milestone system that progresses with the opening of packages.

This system includes significant items like the CAC: Buster Sword R5, a mythic and universal variant of the Buster Sword R2R5.

Previous Controversies and Community Expectations

This isn’t the first time Apex Legends has been embroiled in controversy. Past issues have included the introduction of prestige aspects and the reuse of established designs, such as the Peacekeeper from the Celestial Dawn event.

Moreover, accusations have been made against EA and Respawn for using AI in presenting the Materia Girl outfit for Valkyrie in this new collaboration.

The Developer’s Stance and Potential Actions

As of now, EA and Respawn have not officially addressed this latest controversy. However, the community’s response to the Apex coin investment might prompt them to take action. Despite the aesthetic-focused backlash, players can still enjoy the unique gameplay experience offered by the event.

Apex Legends’ Latest Collaboration

The Apex Legends and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth collaboration stands as a testament to the evolving nature of game monetization and player engagement. It highlights the delicate balance developers must maintain between introducing innovative content and respecting the community’s expectations and sentiments.
