After an extended 10-month runtime, Crownfall has officially concluded in Dota 2, leaving players eager for fresh content.
However, while last night’s Crownfall Archive update marked the end of the event, it didn’t bring a new gameplay patch or a replacement event—contrary to what many had expected given the recent staging updates spotted on Dota 2’s SteamDB page.
With no immediate announcements, players are now speculating about when Valve will finally release a gameplay update, especially since Dota 2 has been running on an aging meta for months.
Is February 28 the Next Major Patch Date?
One of the more intriguing theories floating around the community is that Dota 2’s next patch could drop on February 28, 2025, due to an upcoming full planetary alignment on that date. This cosmic event will see seven planets—Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Venus, Neptune, Mercury, and Saturn—appear in the night sky at once.
A hopeful Dota 2 player pointed out that the Crownfall Archive blog post included the phrase:
👉 “It’s time for us to… point our compasses at some new guiding stars.”
While this is likely just a figurative expression, some fans are taking it as a subtle hint from Valve. The Reddit user who proposed this theory admits it’s a long shot, noting that the planetary alignment involves planets, not stars. Still, Dota 2 players have been known to read into Valve’s cryptic clues, hoping for any sign of a long-overdue update.
How Long Has It Been Since the Last Dota 2 Patch?
It’s been a long time since Dota 2 saw any major balance changes:
- Patch 7.37 was released on July 31, 2024 (over six months ago).
- Patch 7.37e, the most recent balance update, dropped on November 19, 2024 (nearly three months ago).
With this long gap, the meta has become stale, leading to repeated encounters with the same overpowered heroes across ranked matches.
Could Valve Be Waiting for Tournament Downtime?
Aside from the astronomical speculation, there’s a more practical reason why Valve may have delayed the next patch.
- The BLAST Dota 2 Slam II event is currently underway, with its grand final on February 9.
- The next major tier-one event, DreamLeague Season 25, begins on February 16.
This means that February 10–15 could serve as a perfect window for Valve to drop a major gameplay patch. Historically, Valve hasn’t hesitated to release patches mid-tournament, as seen with Patch 7.37 during Elite League Season 2 last year.
Patch Coming Soon?
With Crownfall officially in the past, Dota 2 fans are now hungry for new content. Whether the February 28 planetary alignment holds any significance or not, the game desperately needs a gameplay patch—and soon.
With a brief downtime between tournaments, Valve could finally deliver the much-awaited update within the next few weeks. Until then, players will have to keep their fingers crossed and wait for any official announcements.
