Major Changes to ESL Pro Tour CS2 for 2025: Everything You Need to Know

18. December 2024 by Valentin Pasetti

The professional Counter-Strike competitive scene is gearing up for 2025, and one of its premier tournaments, the ESL Pro Tour, is making significant changes that promise to benefit players and teams alike. Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of all the updates for the upcoming season.

Updated Invitation System for ESL Pro Tour

Following the conclusion of the Shanghai Major, where Team Spirit claimed victory over FaZe Clan in a thrilling 2-1 final, ESL announced plans to overhaul its tournament invitation system. Starting in 2025, all invitations to qualifiers and main events will be based on Valve’s Regional Rankings (VRS), abandoning the previous ESL World Ranking system.

This change aligns ESL’s tournaments with Valve’s updated operational directives for the Counter-Strike 2 competitive ecosystem. It ensures a fairer system where teams are rewarded based on regional performance, leveling the playing field for aspiring teams worldwide.

Increased Prize Pool and Revenue Distribution

ESL also unveiled a significant boost to its prize pools for 2025, beginning with IEM Katowice, where the total prize money will increase from $1 million to $1.25 million.

A standout feature of this change is the 80/20 revenue split:

  • 80% of the prize money will go directly to the players.
  • 20% will be allocated to their respective organizations.

This shift places a greater focus on player compensation, ensuring that those competing at the highest level are rewarded more generously for their performance.

Annual Club Incentive Program

In addition to revamped prize distribution, ESL announced a Club Incentive Program, which introduces a $2.95 million prize pool. This annual program will reward the top 16 organizations that contribute the most to the Counter-Strike scene.

The incentive structure emphasizes fairness, with rewards distributed equitably among participating organizations. By doing so, ESL aims to foster long-term stability and growth within the ecosystem, motivating teams to invest in the competitive landscape.

A $22 Million Investment Over Two Years

Over the course of 2025 and 2026, ESL has pledged to allocate $11 million annually to support clubs and players. This commitment highlights ESL’s dedication to elevating the Counter-Strike scene, not only in terms of prize pools but also in offering sustainable support to its participants.

Kickoff with IEM Katowice 2025

The ESL Pro Tour 2025 season will officially begin on January 29, 2025, with the iconic IEM Katowice. This tournament marks the start of an exciting year filled with top-tier competition and a redefined structure that promises to elevate the entire Counter-Strike 2 community.
