God of War Series Confirmed for a Second Season Before Its Premiere

18. March 2025 by Francisco Villafana

God of War is one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed video game sagas worldwide. The story of Kratos has captivated audiences since its debut on PlayStation 2, following the Spartan’s relentless quest for vengeance against the Olympian gods.

Although the franchise remained dormant for several years, Santa Monica Studio revived it in 2018 with a fresh take on the series. The new God of War was not a remake but rather a continuation, introducing major gameplay and narrative changes.

God of War is Getting Its Own TV Series

Thanks to the overwhelming success of the 2018 God of War, a sequel was inevitable. In 2022, God of War: Ragnarok was released, further expanding Kratos’ journey in Norse mythology.

That same year, Amazon Studios announced a live-action adaptation of Kratos’ story for its streaming platform, Prime Video. While details about the series remained scarce, fans were thrilled to see Kratos’ adventures come to life in a new format.

Unfortunately, the production has faced numerous setbacks. In October of last year, the original team left the project due to creative differences. Writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, along with showrunner Rafe Judkins, departed, leaving the series in an uncertain state.

Despite these challenges, the project remained alive. Ronald D. Moore was later announced as the showrunner, executive producer, and director, ensuring that the adaptation continued development.

Amazon Confirms Second Season Before the Premiere

In a recent interview on The Sackhoff Show, Ronald D. Moore revealed a surprising update: the God of War series on Prime Video has already been renewed for a second season, despite the fact that the first season has yet to air.

“Right now, I’m working on adapting God of War, a major video game title, for Amazon, which has already ordered two seasons. We are actively working in the writers’ room.”

This confirmation has reignited excitement among fans, who are eager to see how Kratos and Atreus’ journey will be portrayed on screen.

Which Games Will the God of War Series Adapt?

Although many fans were introduced to God of War through its PlayStation 2 origins, the franchise’s recent success is the primary reason for the series adaptation.

Moore has confirmed that the show’s storyline will be based on the latest two games: God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarok (2022).

What to Expect from the Story?

Instead of retelling Kratos’ vengeance against the Olympian gods, the series will explore:

  • The father-son relationship between Kratos and Atreus.
  • Their journey to fulfill Faye’s final wish.
  • Encounters with Norse mythology’s most powerful beings.
  • Kratos’ struggles with his past and newfound responsibilities.

The upcoming God of War series on Prime Video is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated video game adaptations in recent years. With a strong creative team now in place and a confirmed second season, the show has the potential to bring Kratos’ story to life in an entirely new way.

Fans can expect a faithful adaptation of the Norse saga, featuring epic battles, emotional storytelling, and stunning visuals that stay true to the legacy of God of War.
