NetEase Reveals Destiny Rising: Everything You Need to Know About the New Mobile RPG Set in the Destiny Universe

15. October 2024 by Valentin Pasetti

The long-awaited mobile RPG set in Bungie’s Destiny universe, Destiny: Rising, has finally been revealed by NetEase Games.

Announced on October 14, this free-to-play game will soon be available for mobile devices, marking the first major project from a partnership between Bungie and NetEase, which began back in 2018 with a $100 million USD agreement.

After years of speculation, Destiny: Rising is set to bring players into a brand-new take on the Destiny universe, with an alpha test coming soon.

Exploring a New Destiny Universe

Destiny: Rising is set in an alternate Destiny universe, where players will take on the role of Lightbearers and explore new territories, both on Earth and beyond. The game’s story takes place during the Dark Age following the Collapse, a period when Earth is invaded, and the battle for survival begins.

Instead of familiar locations like the EDZ and The Last City, players will venture into Jiangshi and the Red Sea Rift, new regions on Earth not previously seen in the mainline Destiny games.

Key structures and enemies from the original Destiny universe will be recognizable, but NetEase and Bungie have confirmed that Destiny: Rising will offer a fresh experience with new locations, characters, and storylines. In this timeline, the Tower—a key location in Destiny 2—doesn’t exist yet, and players will instead gather at a new sanctuary called Haven.

New Gameplay Features

Destiny: Rising will retain many elements that Destiny players know and love, including a story-driven campaign, three-player strikes, and six-player Raids. In addition to PvE content, there will be replayable PvP modes available at launch.

However, a significant change comes with the removal of the classic Hunter, Titan, and Warlock classes. Instead, new playstyles and abilities will be introduced, offering a fresh twist on combat and character progression.

Speaking about the game, Bungie creative lead Terry Redfield stated, “Our partnership team at Bungie has worked to support NetEase in designing Rising to be a game that should be perfect for veterans of the franchise and also appeal to a whole new audience that has yet to experience the world of Destiny.”

Alpha Test Coming in November

Excited players won’t have to wait long to try Destiny: Rising. A closed alpha test will take place on November 1 in North America, with sign-ups already open on the official Destiny: Rising website. This will be the first chance for fans to dive into the new world and explore what this mobile RPG has to offer.

For now, the game is being developed exclusively for mobile devices, with no plans for console or PC versions. Although Destiny: Rising is free-to-play, NetEase has not yet revealed the full details of its monetization model. However, players can likely expect premium cosmetic items, such as weapon ornaments and outfits for Lightbearers.
