Nintendo has officially confirmed that information about the successor to the Nintendo Switch will be unveiled during the current fiscal year, ending in March 2025.
In a message posted on the company’s social media channels, President Shuntaro Furukawa has revealed that a new Nintendo Direct will take place in June, focusing entirely on software, with no mention of the new console.
“Hello everyone, this is Furukawa, President of Nintendo. We will be making an announcement about the successor to the Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been more than nine years since we announced the existence of the Nintendo Switch back in March 2015.
We will be hosting a Nintendo Direct this June focused on Nintendo Switch software lineup for the second half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during this presentation.”
What We Know About Nintendo Switch 2
According to information shared by accessory manufacturers, the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature an 8″ panel with a structure similar to the current console. It will be “slightly larger” than the Nintendo Switch but will not reach the dimensions of devices like the Steam Deck, for example.
The major difference will come in the Joy–Con attachment system. Nintendo is moving away from the current rails and adopting a solution using magnets. This is something the company attempted to implement in 2017, but the technology was not advanced enough to securely hold them in place under all conditions.

The numbers speak for themselves. As of December 31, 2023, Nintendo Switch has sold 139 million units across its four models (original, revision, Lite, and OLED). Compared to the 13.5 million units sold by the Wii U in its 5-year commercial cycle, the shift in momentum is evident.
