Call of Duty: Oxygen Esports Shuts Down, Casting Doubts on Boston Breach’s Future in CDL

8. August 2024 by Valentin Pasetti

In a shocking development for the esports community, Oxygen Esports, the organization behind the Boston Breach in the Call of Duty League (CDL), is reportedly laying off its entire staff and ceasing operations. This news raises significant concerns about the future of the Boston Breach and the CDL’s structure for the upcoming season.

Oxygen Esports to Cease Operations

According to a report by Dexerto’s Jacob Hale, Oxygen Esports is exiting the competitive gaming scene. Established in 2020, the organization gained prominence after partnering with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft’s company in 2021.

Despite its involvement in various esports titles, including VALORANT, Rocket League, Rainbow Six, and ENascar, Oxygen is best known for its role in the CDL with the Boston Breach.

Impact on Boston Breach

The Boston Breach, which entered the CDL in 2022, has been a notable part of the league. However, recent developments have cast a cloud over its future. Players have been informed that they will lose access to the Helix facility and their apartments by August 8.

This comes just before they are scheduled to travel to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the Esports World Cup Modern Warfare 3 tournament.

The Breach’s current roster, featuring Snoopy, Cammy, Owakening, and Purj, recently underwent changes following a disappointing performance in the 2024 CDL season. With a 6-27 series record, Boston finished last in the standings, contributing to a challenging year.

CDL Implications and Future Prospects

Oxygen’s shutdown has implications beyond just the Boston Breach. The team’s departure leaves the CDL with an open spot as the league prepares for a new season with Black Ops 6. The future of the Boston Breach’s players and the potential reallocation of the league’s 12th spot are uncertain.

The Breach was known for hosting Majors at the MGM Music Hall at Fenway, despite their on-field struggles. This aspect highlights their commitment to the league beyond just gameplay.

What’s Next for the CDL and Boston Breach

A formal announcement from Oxygen Esports is expected shortly, with details about severance pay and other formalities. The news is anticipated to be made official by August 9, leaving the esports community and CDL fans waiting for further developments.

"Oxygen Esports and its’ subsidiaries will indefinitely cease operations while Oxygen’s Board of Directors evaluate the best possible path forward for the business". The staff hasn't been laid off, rather furloughed until the Board convenes.
