PGL Cancels CS2 Event in Kraków Just Hours After Announcement

12. February 2025 by Valentin Pasetti

PGL has abruptly canceled its highly anticipated Counter-Strike 2 event in Kraków, Poland, just hours after making the official announcement. The tournament, originally scheduled to take place at the TAURON Arena from January 13 to January 25, 2027, was set to mark CS2’s return to the iconic city for the first time in a decade.

Why Did PGL Cancel the Kraków CS2 Event?

The sudden cancellation was due to scheduling conflicts with TAURON Arena, which informed PGL that the venue would be unavailable in January for the next three years due to another event. This unforeseen issue forced PGL to withdraw its plans, leaving CS2 fans and the competitive community disappointed.

In an official statement, PGL expressed its regret:

“This abrupt decision disappoints PGL and the Counter-Strike community, who eagerly awaited the tournament’s return. We sincerely apologize to the passionate Counter-Strike fans who were excited to witness PGL’s return to Kraków. While this decision is beyond our control, we remain determined to find a world-class venue to deliver the exceptional event.”

PGL Plans to Host a CS2 Event on the Same Dates

Despite the cancellation in Kraków, PGL has confirmed that it still plans to run a CS2 tournament during the same dates (January 13–25, 2027). However, the new venue has yet to be announced.

Clash with BLAST Bounty 2027

PGL’s 2027 event will now overlap with the BLAST Bounty tournament, scheduled to run from January 12 to January 24, 2027. This calendar conflict means that top CS2 teams will have to choose between competing in PGL’s event or BLAST Bounty.

The Future of PGL’s CS2 Events

Following Valve’s recent rule changes, tournament organizers must now announce CS2 events at least two years in advance. This aims to promote an open ecosystem, allowing multiple esports organizers to operate major tournaments without sudden schedule conflicts.

Before its next 2027 event, PGL’s upcoming CS2 competition will be held in Bucharest, Romania, in April 2025. This tournament will feature 16 teams battling for a massive $1.25 million prize pool (~£1.06m).

Conclusion

While PGL’s return to Kraków has been canceled, the organizer remains committed to delivering a top-tier CS2 event in early 2027. Fans will have to wait for updates on the new venue and how the BLAST Bounty scheduling clash will impact the competitive landscape.

For now, PGL’s next major CS2 event in Bucharest this April remains a highly anticipated tournament in the esports calendar.
