Riot Prepares a Historic Attack Speed Change in LoL: Everything You Need to Know

29. January 2025 by Valentin Pasetti

Riot Games has shocked League of Legends players with the announcement of a major adjustment to Attack Speed, one of the game’s fundamental stats.

A Surprise Change to Attack Speed

The League of Legends development team constantly strives to maintain balance in the game through biweekly patches that address critical gameplay issues. However, these changes do not always target champions; sometimes, they focus on core mechanics and systems.

In the preview for patch 25.T1.3, Riot revealed an unprecedented update to Attack Speed mechanics, catching the community off guard. Among various buffs and nerfs in the upcoming update, the most significant revelation was a shift in how Attack Speed is capped.

What Is Changing?

According to Riot Phroxzon, Lead Gameplay Designer, the maximum Attack Speed will be increased from 2.5 to 3 attacks per second starting with the next patch. This marks the first major change to this mechanic in years.

While a 0.5 increase might seem minor at first glance, it has profound implications. Historically, champions that exceeded the previous cap became dominant in the meta. A prime example is Kog’Maw, whose W ability dramatically boosts Attack Speed, or the rune Lethal Tempo, which was temporarily removed from the game due to balance concerns.

Which Champions Benefit the Most?

This change will undeniably favor several champions, especially those who rely on Attack Speed as their primary scaling stat.

  • Jinx and Twitch will see notable benefits, as their attack-based playstyles become even more powerful.
  • Vayne, however, may be the biggest winner of all. With her true damage scaling from Silver Bolts, an increased Attack Speed ceiling allows her to unleash devastating bursts in fights.

When Does This Change Go Live?

The Attack Speed update will be implemented on February 5, coinciding with the release of patch 25.T1.3, as per Riot’s official patch schedule. This adjustment is set to redefine how high-speed champions perform in the game, bringing a fresh dynamic to League of Legends’ evolving meta.
